It happens to most artists that I know… nerves of revealing our work. Whether we’re creating with words, paint, clay, leather, photography, etc., it can be nerve-wracking to reveal our work, no matter how seasoned we are. I know this to be true of artists who have done it for decades, and it’s obviously true for newbies.
Being in the business of providing creative services can be incredibly rewarding but also a tricky business because there are no right or wrong answers. When we create, there are always infinite possibilities. That’s the beauty and the challenge of creating.
While I’ll admit that I still struggle with these nerves, here are some reminders that I try to give myself that may help you too.
Creativity is Subjective
Creativity is deeply personal. The beauty of creativity is how it resonates with us and speaks to our soul. We can automatically feel when a creation is authentic to us.
Authenticity comes in many forms. Everyone has different preferences and visions for how they’d like an idea or request to come to life. Because preferences can be so nuanced and varied, it’s important to remember that, just because there is feedback on a piece, it doesn’t mean there was anything “wrong” with it. There are just some adjustments to align with client preferences.
Because creativity is deeply personal, it’s natural for the client to have feedback. The creation means a lot to them, and we want them to love it.
Nothing is Permanent
While the concept of “nothing is permanent” is easier to embrace in something like writing than pottery, for example, the notion still holds. It just means the amount of re-work required to adjust our course may vary.
Nothing needs to be forever. If some tweaking to the final product needs to be done, it can be done. This helps take the pressure off of the initial delivery.
It’s also important that we take this into account when we offer our services. Maybe we build this feedback loop into the price or maybe we make sure to offer a “pilot” for review before mass producing.
You Were Hired for a Reason
Chances are your client didn’t just close their eyes and point to your name on a list. They probably saw work you’ve done before, met with you and loved your energy, or were referred to you by someone they trust.
They came to you for a reason… they like what you do. Trust that process and trust in yourself to free up the energy to produce more creatively and more freely.
It’s also important to remember that our value is not just transactional. It’s in the experience we provide. It’s in the ease that we create for our clients. It’s in the feeling that we give them from working with us.
