It seems obvious that consistency is something that would be beneficial in our lives… or is it?

In last week’s blog, I talked about consistency as a superpower, what it is, and why it shouldn’t feel like a burden.

But why is consistency so important?

You may be thinking, “Well, of course, no one likes volatility in their lives.” True.. but consistency as a superpower, and not just a circumstance, is a whole different level of being in charge of your own narrative.

Consistency does not mean stagnation. It does not mean setting comfortable goals.

Consistency is what helps you create positive change in your life through small actions completed on a regular basis.

So why is consistency so important for creating these positive changes and reaching your goals?

Sets expectations

Being consistent is a crucial component of setting expectations in both your personal and professional life. Setting expectations is not just important for others but is also important for you.

By being consistent, you are able to establish expectations for yourself. You are able to monitor how much you can take on, your energy levels and expenditures, and what your days will generally look like. This ultimately allows you to have more flexibility and freedom.

By understanding your capacity, where you have more wiggle room, and how you love your days to look, you also know where you can be flexible and when you’ve hit a limit that feels good to you, which allows you to take advantage of the freedom that you’ve created for yourself.

Being consistent also sets expectations of others. While your journey is your own journey, it’s a fact of life that we are going to be intertwined with others. And that’s what makes life so beautiful. Setting expectations is a way to be kind to them. Consistency allows others to see and get to know your authentic self, to know what they can expect from you when, and ultimately create what they desire using these expectations as well.

Setting expectations creates ease and joy for both parties.

Reduces mental load

This is a big one. Consistency helps to reduce your mental load. When you are consistent in your habits and routines, you have less to think about.

For example, in the mornings, my brain gets to go on autopilot for a while. I wake up, journal, workout, shower, eat breakfast, make coffee, and sit down to work. I don’t have to debate about whether I should workout or if I have time to journal. I just do it because I know that with my consistent routine, I have all the time I need in the day to accomplish what I need to.

I just do my routine, and I never regret it. I have, however, regretted not doing my routine.

The same concept of reducing mental load is true for other consistencies that you set up within your day. When you take a particular activity as a given, you don’t need to think about it. Your brain knows that it’s just part of your day, it knows that it can accomplish it despite all the other noise in life, and it moves on to more complex problems to solve.

Strong, healthy habits

Which brings us to developing strong, healthy habits. When you are in the regular habit of doing some activity, it actually becomes easier to do.

When you don’t journal regularly, for example, it feels more daunting to carve out time, put pen to paper, and think about what you’re doing than if it’s just a second nature part of your day. When you do something regularly, you also build confidence in yourself as it relates to that activity, which makes it less daunting.

Consistency makes it easier to stick with healthy habits because the magnitude of the habit seems smaller the more often we do it. We become more efficient at the activity, and we gain confidence as it relates to the activity. And if you’ve chosen habits that you love to do rather than what you feel you should do, your habits become a part of your routine that makes the rest of your day feel good.

Soon habits are being strung together that are helping to create big, positive change in your life.

Helps you gain authority

Lastly, while consistency is important in various realms of life, it is also particularly important in business. Being consistent helps you to gain authority and following.

People are more likely to want to follow along your journey, collaborate with you, learn from you, be a client of yours, etc. when you are consistent. When you are consistent, others can see your commitment which builds their trust in your ability to deliver.

Through consistency, others know your commitment to your craft and your commitment to deliver value to them. But consistency then becomes a ripple effect. When you are consistent as a business, others can develop their own consistency in tandem with you, making it more enjoyable for both your customers and your team when you are consistent.
