The cool part about being a ghostwriter is that if there’s a book you’d love to read on a particular topic, you can just find a client who’s looking to write about that!
“Why not just read an existing book?” you may ask.
Well, first of all, the book may not exist! Also, being part of the creation process allows you to witness the magic, ask questions, and learn firsthand.
“Good for the ghostwriter. What’s the point?” may be a thought going through your head now.
Well, this type of curiosity is important for the author. As an author, it’s important to find a ghostwriter who is genuinely interested in the topic you are writing about. Of course, we’ve talked about ensuring there’s alignment in the vibe and values of the ghostwriter and author, but this is a nuanced difference.
Having a ghostwriter who is genuinely curious about what you want to talk about can make all the difference.
Story Sharing
You’ll be sharing stories and experiences throughout the book writing process. It’s easier to share those journeys when you feel like the person on the other side is genuinely engaged in what you’re speaking about.
Finding a ghostwriter with authentic curiosity helps to create a space where the author feels comfortable expanding on their story without feeling rushed or questioning the merits of what they’re sharing. The ghostwriter is also able to ask insightful follow-up questions with more ease.
This all leads to more depth in the stories that are shared and a more vulnerable lens through which the stories are shared, which helps them to resonate more deeply with the readers and create powerful teaching moments.
Teaching Content
Depending on the type of book you’re writing, you’ll be teaching content throughout the book. This is particularly relevant for business and personal development books. That being said, there is teaching in all books; it just depends on the type of teaching being shared. Memoirs share teaching as well, just in a different style, which is more focused on insights from the journey.
When you collaborate with a ghostwriter who views your writing as a true learning opportunity, they will be better able to ask questions that your reader would ask. As an expert in your field, you may have blind spots in what you’re sharing. You may assume that everyone knows something that you consider to be basic knowledge, but a ghostwriter who is interested in the topic at hand can help in a couple of ways. If they’re not familiar with the topic at all, they can ask questions to pull more complete information and explanations. If they are already familiar with the topic (for instance, I have a Masters in Finance), they can ask questions related to complementary knowledge.
All of this creates an easier reading experience that prevents the reader from having to fill in the gaps on their own and potentially put your book down before the turn of the last page.
How It’s Written
When you partner with a ghostwriter who’s genuinely interested in the topic you’re writing about, it shows in the writing in a couple of ways. First, the ghostwriter becomes invested in your point of view on the topic. They’ve learned all you have to offer over a period of several months and can better showcase your passion for that topic.
The insightful questions a ghostwriter asks during the interviews also translate to the writing. A ghostwriter who asks good follow-up questions can get more details to add depth to the stories and information being shared. They can also add additional research that they perform. All of this translates to the content being written in a way that can best resonate with the target audience.
I’ve always loved to learn. If I could’ve done school without the tests, I would’ve been living my dream. It’s why I love reading so much! Chances are, if you’re passionate about something, I probably want to learn about it. Let’s see if that’s true by chatting during a free strategy session that you can book below!
