Why a Ghostwriter Is Your Secret to Thought Leadership

I’ve been around the corporate block. Little did I know how much that would help me write books.

I spent almost six years working in corporate finance, accounting, and operations with a fair amount of executive exposure. While I could’ve viewed my pivot to starting my own writing business as starting over, it was quite the opposite.

Because of my background, I’m better equipped to connect with executives and entrepreneurs and relate to their day-to-day experiences. I’m able to bring a unique set of experiences to best serve this crowd of people because I get it.

And in a world of AI, social media, and other noise of the day, personal and professional brands are becoming even more important. Many business leaders understand that a book is a great way to set themselves apart from the rest, but these folks usually don’t have the time or energy to devote to it. Here’s why ghostwriters are so crucial for this crowd, particularly ghostwriters who’ve done the corporate thing.

Time and Effort

Ghostwriters are here to make your life easier. Our goal is to take the burden of the work off of you in executing the writing and easing the mental load. Writing is just one part of the process. With my project management background, I guide the project in a clear, organized way so authors always know what’s next and never feel like they have to lead the charge. Other competent ghostwriters will do this too.

We also ask insightful questions during the interview process. This cuts down on mental preparation for the author. While they will need to think about what they want to talk about in the interviews to be included in the book, they don’t need to hit every single point in one monologue. The ghostwriter will help with this flow of information as well.

Ghostwriting is a collaborative process. The ghostwriter won’t just research a whole book and have the author slap their name on it. But ghostwriters still relieve a huge burden of effort in the process.

Voice

Most executives or entrepreneurs who write books want to make an impact in their space, which requires demonstrating authority in order for that impact to actually take hold. A ghostwriter helps create that impact in various ways, two of which relate to the delivery of the message.

First, we are experts in writing books. This creates a well-structured, flowing book written in a way to keep the reader engaged. It’s clear that it’s well-polished and the author invested in it. That is the foundation for gaining authority. We all know books we’ve read that have missed some of these fundamental aspects…

Ghostwriters also help to effectively capture an author’s voice. This is particularly important for executives and entrepreneurs because they usually have a fair amount of their voice out in the public from earnings calls to conferences to podcasts and so much more. The key to the book is capturing that voice but translating it into a literary voice that will be easy for the readers to follow along with. This is another key component to authority building and somewhere a ghostwriter can add immense value.

Collaboration

A ghostwriter’s job is literally collaboration. Yes, writing is important, but we could do that on our own. The ghostwriting process is one of partnership. While the nature of this collaboration is frequently between the ghostwriter and the author(s), this can expand in several ways.

As a business leader, you may have other colleagues or team members who want to provide input on your book as well. You may even want other experts in this field to provide quotes or stories for your book.

Ghostwriters are able to work with this variety of input and still create a cohesive book with a variety of perspectives blended into one theme and voice. Ghostwriters can flex their approach based on the circumstances. While writing is often seen as an isolated profession, ghostwriting is not.

Collaboration was one of the main reasons that I loved project management, so I’m happy to bring this to my new world. The business environment isn’t siloed. Your book shouldn’t be either. But collaboration takes time, and that’s where a ghostwriter can add value.
