Camaraderie over Competition: The Benefits of Cultivating Your Book Community

One of the unique things that I love about the book world is the community. Unlike many other spaces, we don’t need to be constantly competing.

Some of you who know me may be surprised to hear me saying that. I’m a competitive person, and I love a good competition. But when it comes to the work that we do day in and day out, it’s so fulfilling to be able to lift others up and support them while they do the same for you.

This is certainly true for authors. But it’s even true for service providers in the space. I know lots of amazing ghostwriters supporting each other as well. There are so many books to be written, and we can only handle so many, so why not support each other in supporting our authors?

If you’ve been worried about writing a book because you’re concerned about how you will “compete” in your space, let’s dispel that limiting belief. That’s one of the easiest myths we can overcome to help bring your book ot life.

Let’s talk about the benefits of building a book community rather than trying to best everyone else.

Plenty of Reading to Go Around

Yes, there are so many books to be written for those who desire to be authors. But there are also so many books to be read.

I forget where I heard this first, but when I heard it, it resonated so deeply. If someone reads a book in one particular space, they’re likely to read more books in that space. Readers are looking to acquire knowledge. Reading is often not a one-and-done deal. If they like a book in a specific genre, they’ll often look for other books in that genre.

With that theory, it benefits authors in similar spaces to support each other on the journey! Good books create momentum for a reader to pick up more books.

Books are a low investment for readers that give tons of different knowledge and perspectives. Even in similar spaces, a reader will get a different experience with each book they pick up. The more the merrier!

Community Support

Knowing all that, why would you not want to support others in the book community? When we lift up other authors, everybody wins!

That author wins because you’re helping them share their story and expertise.

The readers win because they’re getting exposure to really great books.

And you win because you’re helping keep momentum going in your space that may lead others to your book as well.

We can also support authors in other spaces. Readers enjoy variety and learning about different things. They also enjoy complementary topics. Someone may read a personal development book on confidence and a book about digital media if they’re looking to increase their visibility.

It benefits everyone to find great humans writing great books and promoting those.

Creating Connections

By supporting other people’s books, you are also opening the door to create new connections.

Someone’s book is a window into what makes that person who they are… their experiences, their values, their beliefs, their knowledge. They put their heart and soul into that book.

When you reach out to that author with a personal note about what you loved about their book or their story, they’ll appreciate that. And you’ve started an authentic and organic conversation. From that small action, you’ve likely developed a genuine connection.

I also see folks in my network bonding over books all the time. Someone will promote a friend’s book. Other connections will appreciate a solid recommendation. This increases trust among those relationships. And then readers are also able to connect with that author if they so desire. The connections can be many levels deep.

Authors support authors.

Readers support readers.

The book community is strong.
