Consistency be a superpower? Hmmm…
It was recently pointed out to me that consistency is one of my superpowers. Although upon reflection, I noticed that I’d been told that before in different ways, I’d never thought of consistency as being a superpower. I just took it for granted…
But after thinking more about this, consistency is 100% a superpower. Actually, it is a superpower in almost any realm of life that you can think of, whether that be personal or professional.
Consistency isn’t the most glamorous superpower, that’s for sure. It doesn’t sound as fun or powerful or unique as some of the other superpowers we might be able to think of.
But that doesn’t make it any less impactful…
So what does the superpower of consistency mean and why does it scare some people?
What is consistency?
There are so many different ways to think about consistency. When you think of consistency, you may think of being persistent and constant in your habits. Alternatively, you may think of being dependable when it comes to your responsibilities. Or maybe you just think of routine and structure in general.
Just as freedom and happiness are very personal, consistency can mean different things for different people. For some people, working out three times a week is considered consistency and for others, working out every day is what consistency means for them, for example.
No matter what consistency means for you in your life, consistency in general means sticking with the commitment that you’ve made which will lead to your incremental progress. This commitment could be to your health through diet and exercise, to your relationships through carving out quality time, to your business through creating structure, to yourself through a self-care routine, or to so many other aspects of your life. But you get the idea.
What is consistency not?
For several years, my version of “consistency” took the form of working very hard and unwavering commitment to growth in my career. Not to say that there is anything wrong with hard work or growth. In fact, those are laudable qualities.
However, the diligent hyper-achiever in me was taking my consistency in one area of my life to an extreme. I was being hyper-consistent in my career; however, I was anything but consistent in the other areas of my life. I wasn’t being consistent working out, eating healthy, or honoring my plans with others.
So consistency does not mean that you become hyperfocused on one area of your life to devote your entire energy to what you’re looking to be consistent with. Extreme consistency that leads us to allow other areas of our life to wilt becomes the opposite of a superpower.
Why does consistency feel scary to some?
Aside from the hyperfocus myth that we just busted, consistency can cause some people to feel resistance because they may be feeling that consistency takes away their flexibility. I would challenge anyone feeling this way to reframe this belief into what truly makes consistency a superpower.
Even though consistency is one of my superpowers, I still take spontaneous trips, enjoy girls’ nights out, and bum around the house. In fact, I believe that my consistency actually ALLOWS ME THIS FLEXIBILITY.
By being consistent, I have clear expectations of myself and others have clear expectations of me. I know how much work I can get done and when, I know my energy limits, and I know where I have wiggle room in my schedule.
Being consistent doesn’t mean being a “prisoner” to a specific location or a specific schedule.
Can I journal from the mountains? Sure can.
Can I write my blog from the beach? You betcha.
Can I workout from at an Airbnb? Of course.
Why is consistency important?
Consistency is important for so many reasons. I was going to cover why consistency is so important in this article but you’d just be reading a dissertation at that point. So stay tuned for my blog next week on why consistency is so important. In the meantime, I recommend The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson (links to hardcover and Audible) for an inspiring read on the power of consistency.
If you’re looking to add more consistency in your business, a copywriter is a great place to start to get consistency in strategic messaging, consistency in the cadence of materials being produced, and to get a consistent partner with your business.
