Reflection, Catharsis, Reach: The Unexpected Benefits of Writing a Book

As business owners, we’re always told that we need to take time to work on our business and not just in our business. In fact, we may even advocate for this when speaking to other business owners.

But as a business owner, it feels hard to carve out that time dedicated to your own business and not just your clients. And even when you’re not focused on client work, you likely spend your time on family, friends, or hobbies.

But what if you could have a way to work on your business while also producing an evergreen asset that will last you years into the future?

Enter the power of writing a book.

A chance to zoom out

Chances are that when you see your name on the cover of the book of your dreams, that book is not going to chronicle your daily, weekly, or monthly tasks and projects. That book is going to cover your audacious goals and visions, the lessons you’ve learned along the way, and the impact you hope to make on the world.

Writing a book pretty much forces you to zoom out from your day-to-day. It’s an opportunity to reflect on your experiences that have gotten you to the point you’re at. This will automatically lead to you be thoughtful about what’s worked and what hasn’t worked.

It gives you a chance to think about how you want to execute on your mission and purpose going forward while also paying it forward to the next generation of leaders by proactively helping them through what they will inevitably encounter on their own journeys.

Organize your thoughts

Sure you’re organized on a day-to-day basis. You have your to-do list filled with client work, quarterly goals, etc.

But a book gives you the chance to organize your thoughts on a macro level. You’ll start to ask yourself what the main value drivers of your business are, how you want your brand perceived, and what the world would be missing without your business.

These are questions that business owners don’t frequently think of on a daily basis. You get so invested in the operations and expansion of the business that you may not fully realize the value or perception of your business. And in some cases, others may view your business differently than you do.

While writing a book is a great way to organize and flesh out these thoughts, hiring a ghostwriter amplifies this effect. A ghostwriter will be able to thoughtfully structure interviews with these questions, provide an outside perspective, and dig deep into these thoughts.

Reflection on your purpose

As you dig deep into the knowledge that you want to share and the impact that you want to make with your book, your eyes may be opened to an even larger purpose that you’re called to fulfill.

Maybe you had become comfortable and content with your success and realized it’s time to put your foot on the accelerator again. And oh, by the way, your book is a great tool to do this. Your book will help you to reach a broader audience and get your foot in the door of more opportunities than before (e.g. speaking engagements).

We are purpose-driven beings. The inevitable reflection and catharsis that come along with the book writing process will help you to refresh and refine your vision for your business and your own personal development.
