When I first contemplated a career in writing, I almost didn’t even start…
I know this is a familiar start to the story of a new entrepreneur.
But what makes this story different is that the reason I almost didn’t even start was because I was so worried about being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI).
Fortunately, I decided to pursue this path anyway because I knew it would help me create a life that I would love. I knew I had already pivoted a few times in my career, and I could pivot again if needed.
I decided to be curious instead of just writing the idea off and found resources about the power of personal connection through writing and the use of AI as a tool rather than a replacement for human writing and creativity.
Boy, am I glad that I didn’t cave to those fears!
Now that I’ve started my business, I still hear of others that feel businesses can just use AI for their writing needs rather than hiring a copywriter or strategic communicator.
And I’m here to dispel that myth, talk about the benefits but limitations of AI, and discuss the power of having a copywriter or strategic communicator on your team.
The merits of AI
Just so you know I’m not on a witch hunt after AI (because I’m not), I want to start by talking about some of the benefits of AI.
In the world of writing, AI is a great tool for brainstorming, idea generation, curing writer’s block, and other similar activities. It’s like having someone that you can bounce ideas off of and can give options for how to continue on with the momentum that you have.
AI is also great for canvasing the internet to give you a list of prompts that you can work with and synergize for future use rather than having to go click through Google for different articles or scour different social media accounts.
AI is also great for taking on repetitive, manual tasks to allow your focus to shift to more complex, high-value tasks.
Speaking of more complex, high-value tasks…
The power of human strategy
While AI is capable of writing something like a blog or an email if you feed it a pretty comprehensive prompt, there’s one key component missing that AI can’t provide but a copywriter can: STRATEGY.
A quality copywriter will start with helping you to develop a communications or marketing strategy before they even put pen to paper. And this doesn’t necessarily happen through just one medium of copy.
More often than not, that copywriter will be working to develop a strategy throughout the funnel from top of funnel ads to freebies to welcome sequences all the way down to landing pages to sell what you have to offer.
This strategy creates cohesive sequences of communication that seamlessly flow together, build up to your call to action, are tailored to your current points of focus, use the voice of your business, and ultimately get your audience to act on your offer.
And after all, isn’t that the whole point of copywriting?
The personal human touch
In a world inundated with technological advances, we crave human connection and human story.
AI will certainly try its best and many times will have the capability to sound like a human in a particular piece. But having the ability to write like a human and having the personal touch are two different things.
I just explained how a copywriter develops a strategy before the pen even hits the paper. But there’s a step that the copywriter will take even before the strategy is developed…
Getting to know you and your business!
A copywriter will take the time to get to know you, to intimately understand the needs of your business, and to understand your target audience. This connection is a much deeper connection than feeding a prompt to AI that includes a description of your business. A copywriter will be able to immerse readers in an experience related to your story, your values, and your mission.
Furthermore, many times, a copywriter will be able to point out aspects of your business that you have not realized or thought about yourself because you’ve been so close to the business for so long. A copywriter is so much more than just a writer, they are a strategic partner.
So if you’d like one email based on a prompt that may be witty and include the info you asked for, then sure… go for AI. But if you really want to sell your readers on your call to action, immerse them in the experience of your business, and nurture a relationship with your consumers, then hire a copywriter.
While I’m a writer and storyteller at heart, I’m also passionate about empowering others to further elevate their businesses through strategic communication and storytelling. If you’re looking for someone to help you refine your strategy and then craft those communications for you, book a free strategy session with me!
