You Aren’t One-Dimensional: Your Brand Shouldn’t Be Either

When I first started my business, my photographer (shout out to Lauren Elizabeth Photography) said that Golden Retrievers were definitely part of my brand. I hadn’t really thought of that before but the more I reflected on it, she was definitely right.

Recently I’ve been talking in these blogs about the importance of having fun with your brand and not being one-dimensional. Despite the limited space in my LinkedIn and Instagram headlines, I still make space for “Golden Retriever Lover”.

There are aspects of my brand that aren’t directly related to the services I provide that are still evident to my followers and clients. The two aspects of my brand that you’re likely to see over and over again are Golden Retrievers and mountains.

While these aspects of my brand aren’t directly tied to my services, let’s talk about the importance of them in my branding.

A glimpse into you

When you have fun with your brand and show that you aren’t one-dimensional, it gives potential clients a glimpse into you.

For example, part of my brand is Golden Retrievers and mountains. Those two things probably immediately give you a glimpse into my personality. Sporty, adventurous, joyful…

Let’s dig in a little deeper.

The Golden Retriever aspect of my brand signifies the passion that I have for serving my clients. The mountains signify the freedom that I love to create for them. You can feel this when you think of these two things, and you can imagine how I can help you tell your story in a similar way.

Before you even get to know me, you can take a guess at what it will be like to work with me based on the elements that are present in my brand.

Resonates with your ideal client

The multi-dimensional aspects of your brand help you to stick out in the crowd to your ideal client. The other dimensions of you besides your service offerings will resonate with those that you are most likely to effectively serve.

For example, business owners that have a similar energy to me will resonate with the feelings and inspiration that they get when viewing my content that relates to Golden Retrievers and mountains. Now that doesn’t mean that I only work with or target people that love the same things as me. The point is that there is a sense of the type of energy that will be present in our working relationship.

If someone is torn between me and another strategic brand communicator, the multi-dimensional aspects of my brand are what is going to resonate with them and make them remember me. I’m often reminded of the story my coach told me where she was torn between two coaches for herself. She went on the Instagram of each coach and picked the one where she felt they shared a similar energy.

That is the power of a strong, consistent, multi-dimensional brand.

Supports your message

At the risk of sounding like a broken record at this point, the key is always to strike a balance.

You don’t want the “fun” parts of your brand to detract from your messaging and the transformation that you can provide. Instead, these facets of your brand should be used to support the message that you are conveying but should not be the “main character” in your messages.

You don’t want to create noise that will distract your audience from what you have to offer. Your goal is to tell them the story that is going to convey the type of transformation they can experience working with you.

But for me, many times the lessons or inspiration I’ve received that allow me to better serve my clients have come in spending time with one of the many Golden Retrievers in my life or spending time in the mountains. As such, these elements of my brand allow me to better convey my messaging and transformation.

P.S. The photo attached to the blog was not taken by Lauren Elizabeth Photography but I wanted to grab one that captures both Golden Retrievers and mountains. You can see some of her amazing professional work on my website and in many of my other blogs.
