How to Write a Book through a Few Conversations

Have you ever wondered how a ghostwriter gets all the information they need to write a whole book for you? It may seem overwhelming, but it’s really just a series of interviews.

And now that you’ve heard the word “interviews,” you feel a different type of resistance. When we think of interviews, we typically think of higher pressure situations where we need to be polished.

But that’s not the case when working with a ghostwriter. A ghostwriter is someone you can be vulnerable with, tell your favorite stories to, and teach the things that light you up.

I like to think of these conversations more as having coffee with a friend.

Curious to learn more about these conversations? Let’s dive in!

Stories

It’s no surprise that the key to a good book is the stories! This is true no matter what kind of book you’re writing, even for books that want to share business tactics and strategies.

Stories are what keep your readers engaged and what help them to best consume the material. For thousands of years (or more?), humans have communicated information through the use of stories, and we’re no different.

So during the interview, I’ll ask you to share some stories with me related to the topic(s) we’re covering in that particular interview. These stories could be your own stories or the stories of friends, clients, etc.

This is fun because who doesn’t love to tell stories?!

Teaching

I will also ask you to teach me. If you’re writing a book in the business or personal development realm, I’ll ask you to teach me about the topic at hand. If you’re writing a memoir, I’ll ask you to tell me more about how your experiences tie back to your theme.

Depending on the topic at hand and the client, there are various prompts I may use to help you get in the flow of teaching.

And the fun part is that this happens organically! We’re on a video call, and I genuinely ask you to teach me something… help make me the expert on what lights you up! You can make the teaching as formal or as informal as you want, like you’re presenting to me or like we’re catching up like old friends.

We’ll always take the approach that works best for you. And guess what, there are no rules! Throw in a few of your favorite stories here as well!

Conversational

The key to all of this is that the “interview” is really just a conversation. It’s not up to you to give a polished speech like you’re on a live show.

I just want you to genuinely and authentically talk about the topics and stories that light you up and that you want to share with the world. You don’t need to worry about the polishing because as a ghostwriter, I take care of the initial polishing for you before we work to polish together!

We’ll also find a conversation style that works best for you. You want me to just sit and listen while you teach? Great! You want me to be more part of the conversation? Let’s do that!

The more you can feel in the flow, the more gems of information we can add to the book that will make you love the end product.

If you want to get more of a taste of what it’s like to work with me as a ghostwriter, let’s have a conversation! This allows you to feel the energy, joy, and ease that happens in our interviews together.
