To label or not to label? What’s a multi-passionate entrepreneur to do?

“Nobody puts Baby in a corner.” – Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) in Dirty Dancing.

Okay…. Maybe not quite the right use of the phrase, but this is exactly what kept popping into my mind as I tried to figure out how to label myself while updating my LinkedIn and coming up with an updated closing statement for my content.

I serve my clients in so many different ways depending on their needs that it’s difficult to associate with just one label or title. Once I have the conversation and develop the relationship with my clients, they see all the different ways I am able to serve them and how my various offerings all work together.

But to put that in a LinkedIn label… that’s tough.

I know I’m not the only one feeling this way. As a multi-passionate entrepreneur or creator, you don’t want to put yourself in a box, but you want others to be able to easily find you and identify if you’ll be able to help solve a problem for them.

Specificity matters

Sure, I could just pick a couple of broad words (which I do in my LinkedIn cover photo), but specificity is important when trying to reach your target audience.

I don’t want to call myself just a writer because businesses likely won’t know that I write for businesses. The same applies to the label of coach because my coaching is generally in the context of the business owners that I work with.

The list of potential examples could go on and on. On the one hand, it’s important to find labels and titles that will speak to and help you find your target audience. On the other hand….

Labels are, well…. Labels

A label can sometimes put you in a box. As a society, our goal is not to stereotype through labels because it puts someone in a box and makes assumptions about them without really knowing them.

There are forums, however, where we are limited in the space we have to succinctly convey what we do. In those cases, we often have to find a way to label ourselves.

But what do you do when you’re a multi-passionate, multi-faceted entrepreneur or creator?

Am I a copywriter? Yes, but I also do more than copywriting. I’m a strategic communication partner who can help you tell your brand story and deliver more than just your traditional copywriting. I can also synergize that offering with being a strategic coach to help you land and refine your mission, vision, values, etc.

As a multi-passionate entrepreneur who offers many complimentary services that all play well together, it’s hard to choose a label that won’t turn away some of your potential target audience.

Striking a balance is key

As always, balance and flexibility are the keys.

You can often capture the sentiments of what you’d consider yourself by stringing a few words together or using a phrase rather than a title. And sometimes you need to give yourself the flexibility to play around with it a bit to see what sticks and feels right as your business evolves.

Coming up with your own “title” can be tough, and that’s where a multi-passionate creator and coach like myself comes into play to help you land this. I can help you develop a clearer picture of yourself while crafting the words to portray that.
