3 Ways to Overcome a Common Entrepreneurial Barrier to Entry

It’s pretty obvious that small businesses are strikingly different than larger corporations. This is particularly true if you’re a one-man shop. But despite all these differences, there are some foundational elements of business that remain the same no matter your size.

One of those elements is: Competition

I was asked the other day if I was worried about the number of copywriters in the market or about the continued momentum of AI.

My answer was easy: No, I’m not concerned at all.

We’ve already talked in past articles and posts about why I’m not concerned about AI and feel that AI can be used as a tool going forward. But in this article, I’m going to dive into why the amount of copywriters in the market doesn’t concern me.

And more broadly, I want this article to address why there are always opportunities for success even in markets that are firmly established. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Mastering mindset

The first and most foundational reason that I don’t get worried about the number of other copywriters or ghostwriters is because I have put in and continue to put in the work to master my mindset.

While I’m cognizant that the world of copywriting, ghostwriting, branding, etc. is vast, I also know that there are a lot of businesses in the world and a huge need for these skillsets. It really all comes down to having an abundance mindset. Not only am not worried about getting work, but I don’t gatekeep either. I want to help others experience success as well.

Worrying about the fact that others already offer a product or service is a pervasive mental barrier to entry for so many aspiring entrepreneurs. But those products and services exist for a reason, and it’s because people need and want them!

There’s always room for differentiation even if it’s not obvious.

Providing unique value

Which brings me to my next point that no two services are alike. The nature and the quality of the services really come down to the person or people providing them.

I’m confident in my ability to provide unique value by combining my corporate experiences, my project management training, the investment in my copywriting skills, and other life experiences and investments that have made me who I am today. These allow me to provide my clients with excellent work while creating fun and ease in the process.

What unique skills and experiences can you bring to the table? I had never thought finance, project management, and writing would come together so well but voila! So if you dig deep enough and reflect hard enough, I bet you can see how the fabric of your experiences comes together to create a truly unique offering.

Staying relevant

Just as with any business, you will separate yourself from the pack by staying relevant. Understanding the latest trends, keeping up with advancements in technology, and adapting to the changes in the industry you serve will help you better serve your clients.

This will help you to outpace others in your space who aren’t putting this type of investment into their personal or business development. This upskilling comes from educational opportunities but also hands-on experience.

The goal is to be the Netflix, not the Blockbuster.
